Wellington-based Jessica Leigh began writing and producing music at a young age and has found her home in pop music, often championing a chorus of 80’s inspired synths, warm guitars and anthemic drums. Her songs are inspired by the technicolour emotional spectrum of youth. The storytelling within them often depicts vibrant, visceral coming-of-age narratives, reflecting on themes such as young love, friendship, growing pains and everything in between.
Leigh won a regional song-writing competition in 2019 and began releasing music shortly after. She released her debut EP ‘17’ in 2020, which accrued over 300,000 streams and followed it up with a sophomore EP ‘summerland’ in 2021. The lead single from summerland, ‘SUMMER ROYALTY’ gained over 40k streams on Spotify and was selected for Spotify and Apple Music curated playlists.
In 2023 Leigh released ‘WIRED’ and ‘missing you’ which were both Spotify and Apple playlisted including Fresh Finds AU&NZ and Fresh Finds Pop.
‘WIRED’ has achieved 200k streams so far and CHR radio play in NZ as well as featuring on Air NZ onboarding music. ‘missing you’ charted at number 17 on the hot NZ singles charts. In early November, Leigh released her EP 'LIGHTBEAM'.
For as long as she can remember, Leigh has always romanticised her life. Growing up with a deep adoration of art, music and poetry Leigh learned how to paint her own world in ways worth reflecting upon artistically. This knack for casting experiences in a rosy, golden hue adds a unique touch to her song-writing and sound. Leigh is strongly inspired by Lorde, Taylor Swift and MUNA.
“I find there is unparalleled beauty in youth. Life is so rich when you’re young and everything and everybody lasts forever. I can’t think of anything more romantic than that.”
